Husband Arrested for Wife's Death

Elk Grove Police Department Detectives arrested a husband for the death of his wife that occurred back in January of this year.

During the morning of January 12, 2023, Glennis Smith called 9-1-1 and reported that his 49-year-old wife, identified as Jennifer Smith-Floyd, was unconscious and not breathing. The couple had been married for five years but had been living apart for several months prior to the incident.

Fire personnel and officers responded to their residence but where Smith had been predominately living and rendered medical aid; however, Smith-Floyd was pronounced deceased.

During the course of the extensive investigation, evidence revealed the presence of fentanyl in Smith-Floyd’s system and detectives determined Smith had intentionally put fentanyl in Smith-Floyd’s food on two occasions without her knowledge. The last instance, which proved fatal, occurred on the morning of January 12th.

A few months after Smith-Floyd’s death, an arson of the couple’s travel trailer occurred at a local self-storage. Cosumnes Fire Arson Investigators, in collaboration with the Elk Grove Police Department's Investigations Bureau, conducted a thorough investigation, which resulted in the determination that Glennis Smith was responsible for setting the fire.

Subsequently, based on the findings from the investigation, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Smith.

Yesterday, detectives located the 48-year-old Smith in Elk Grove and took him into custody for the murder of Jennifer Smith-Floyd.

Smith was booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail where is he being held without bail on charges of Murder (Penal Code 187 (A)), Arson (Penal Code 451 (D)), and Insurance Fraud (Penal Code 548 (A)).
