Abandoned Vehicles

Under California Vehicle Code 22669(a), any peace officer, who has reasonable grounds to believe that a vehicle has been abandoned, may remove the vehicle from a highway/street or from public or private property.

Elk Grove Municipal Code 10.24.0709(i) makes it unlawful to park any vehicle, i.e.: motor home, trailer, travel trailer, truck camper, camping trailer, boat trailer car or truck, for more than 72 hours on any highway in a residential district or to move and re-park the vehicle within 300 feet of the original parking site within any 72 hour period.

There is no requirement to give notice so the owner may move the vehicle.  If you had a notice placed on your vehicle, it was done as a courtesy ONLY.

Valid Vehicle Registration

All vehicles on the roadway are required to have current registration.  Having current registration does not give you permission to park or store your vehicle at one location on a public street for more than 72 hours. This includes parking in front of your own residence!

Your registration or operating permit must be clearly visible.

If you plan to leave your vehicle in one spot for an extended period or time, you should move your vehicle to your driveway, garage, public storage or some other hard dry surface (Not your Front Yard or Lawn Area!).  it is possible that you could be on vacation for a week or more and your vehicle could be tagged as abandoned.  A notice could be placed, re-inspected in 3 days and towed, all before your return from your trip.

Expired Registration

Vehicles with expired or incomplete registration, including NON-OP (PNO) CANNOT be parked or stored on the street at any time. Incomplete registration includes those that are waiting for a smog test or are still paying fees.

If the registration has been expired for 6 months or more, it can be towed immediately without notice or warning! [CVC 22651(o)]

Dismantled Vehicles

Motor vehicles that are parked, resting or otherwise immobilized on any highway or public right-of-way and that lack an engine, transmission, wheels, tires, doors, windshield or any other part or equipment necessary to operate safely on the highways of this state, are hereby declared a hazard to public health, safety and welfare and may be removed immediately upon discovery by a peace officer or other designated employee of the state, county or city.  [CVC 22669(d)]

If you know of an abandoned vehicle, please call the Elk Grove Police Traffic Unit at 916-478-8140 or complete the "Abandoned Vehicle Compliant Form" on our "Online Reporting" page.
