ELK GROVE SAFETY TOWN

A Child Accident Prevention Program

ELK GROVE, CA – As part of a continuing effort to promote youth safety, the Elk Grove Police Department, the Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) and the Cosumnes Community Services District (CSD) are pleased to announce that Safety Town will be starting on July 10th at Helen Carr Castello Elementary School. This year, Safety Town will offer two sessions. The first session will run from July 10th through July 14th. The second session will run from July 17th to July 21st. Safety Town is an exciting one week comprehensive educational program that will introduce preschool children (4 to 5 years of age) to safety awareness. This program, which has been nationally recognized, teaches children entering kindergarten in the fall basic safety awareness and accident prevention through hands-on learning activities.

These basic safety awareness lessons will cover topics such as pedestrian and bicycle safety, school bus safety, poison prevention, basic fire prevention and home and water safety.  All of the information is presented in age appropriate fashion through song and hands-on activities. Safety Town students will also have an opportunity to explore a fire truck, police car, and a school bus.  In addition, all students will receive a T-shirt for their participation in the program.

“Having an opportunity to reinforce the basic safety awareness messages that children are already receiving at home is critical to a child’s development,” said Elk Grove Police Chief Bryan Noblett.  “The Elk Grove Police Department, the Cosumnes Community Services District and the Elk Grove Unified School District are excited that this nationally recognized program will be available to young children in our community.”

“Close collaboration with our community partners helps us promote the importance of safety, which is key to keeping our sites safe and productive learning environments. We welcome the assistance from specialized transportation staff who can help provide training at our schools during the Elk Grove Police Department’s Safety Summer program. Student and staff safety is our number one priority,” said Superintendent Christopher R. Hoffman.

The registration fee for the program is $25.00, and enrollment is limited to 40 children per session.  Participants will attend class for three hours a day (9:00 am to 12:00 pm). Acceptance into the program will be on a first come, first served basis. For additional information, please visit www.elkgrovepd.org/safetytown or call (916) 478-8122.
